With the impending launch of McLaren’s first new supercar since the legendary F1, TAG Heuer has created a new timepiece specifically for buyers of the new MP4-12C supercar. The new watch, named the Carrera MP4-12C, is a unique piece with a limited run of 1000 units which will be sold through McLaren dealers to the car owners for $14,000. The orange color and detailing is found in several places on the watch and pays homage to McLaren’s new paint scheme for their Formula 1 test cars. For the last 15 years McLaren has used red, black, and silver liveries on their race cars, but for 2011 they’ve switched over to “McLaren Orange” for testing purposes before the sponsors get to dress up the cars.

The dial, hands, bezel, and beautiful stitching on the strap all get a touch of “McLaren Orange” and the dial itself wouldn’t be complete without a dose of carbon fiber, something McLaren knows all too well about. The famous F1 was the first production road car to use a complete carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque chassis structure.

The layout of the dial is reminiscent of the MP4-12C’s dashboard with a large gauge front and center. A few other special details on the new Carrera MP4-12C timepiece included pushers that resemble piston heads, alcantara for the strap, and a clear sapphire backing to show the internals, much like the rear window on the road car that proudly displays its 592 horspower twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

The new MP4-12C supercar will be available worldwide through select dealers and the on-sale dates have been set for late summer 2011. Base price has been announced at $229,000.

New for 2011, Rolex has announced their brand new Explorer II, now featured in 42mm casing. Paying tribute to the original Explorer from 1971 the 24-hour hand on the Explorer II is arrowe shaped and dressed in a bright orange color. Another new feature is the ability of the 12-hour hand to be set independently, displaying a second time zone.

The Rolex Movement is one of the most desired features of a high end timepiece. The Explorer II utilizes the latest version, calibre 1387, which insures unparalleled reliability and shock resistance by incorporating Rolex’s most recent techonolgies, such as the Paraflex shock absorbers and the non-magnetic Parachrom hairspring.

Legibility is also key in a design as elegant as the Explorer II, so a “phantom” effect dial display adds to the beauty of the new piece. On the dial’s Chromalight display, the blue glow can last up to 8 hours after available light has decreased, practically twice as long as standard luminescent materials.

On the ice covered Baltic Sea off the coast of Finland a Bentley Continental GTC Supersports has just set a new world record. With a speed of 205.48mph (330.70kph), certified by the Finland Police, a Bentley Supersports convertible, yes a Bentley, has set the new world record for the fastest speed on ice. Driven by four-time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen, his Bentley shattered the old record set by a Bentley Continental GT also piloted by Kankkunen, which failed to reach the magical 200mph mark.

In commemoration of Bentley’s new world record Breitling has created a beautiful new timepiece called the Breitling for Bentley Supersports Light Body. A titanium body and red detailing really sets off the new watch, which was designed with the record setting Supersports’ color scheme in mind. Only 1000 units of the Breitling for Bentley Supersports Light Body watch will be made, and the watch, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show this week alongside the very car that set the record, should be available for purchase soon.

Making some improvements from the original UR103, the Tarantula (model number UR103t) incorporates cutting edge new materials and design techniques that take a radical design to the next level. The traditional Geneva Cross design of the previous models now incorporates a new shield like structure that keeps the numbers located on the satellites hidden until they are absolutely needed.

From a mechanical standpoint the Tarantula is a marvel, with the cross and satellite design weighing in at more than 300 times that of a traditional hand design; proving that URWERK’S master craftsmen are truly that. When each hour passes, the satellites perform four 120 degree turns as the cross makes its cycle before they are ready to complete their task for another hour.

To offset weight, the  watch is constructed of high grade titanium and aluminum alloys, as well as relying on ARCAP 40 (an alloy primarily composed of copper and nickel with no magnetic proprieties and a high resistance to corrosion).

The URWERKs 103T is proof that there is still something new and original in the world of fine watches; and a worthy testament to designer Martin Frei, master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner who is pictured below, and the entire URWERK team.

103t PRESS RELEASE:

The ‘T’ in the 103T is at first a mystery, but only until the first look down through the massive sapphire crystal into the mechanism below. There you will sense a shape before you see it. A form slowly emerges from the orbital cross and stretches its mesmerising legs: ‘T’ for Tarantula! URWERK’s latest addition to the UR103 collection has a few genetic codes borrowed from one of the most famous members of the world of arachnids.

The Aesthetics. In the classic UR103, the central element is an orbital cross in titanium. In the new UR103T, the titanium cross has been replaced by a completely redesigned structure in ARCAP, a very stable copper/nickel alloy. The dark ARCAP wraps around the hour satellites in a protective embrace – though we can perhaps imagine something more sinister! This new configuration ensures that the numbers on the hour satellites can only be seen when they are required to tell the time while passing the arc of the minutes. With the UR103T, time takes on a different conceptual and even philosophical dimension to that of the open satellite system on the classic UR103. With the UR103T, the past and the future remain hidden – only the present is revealed.

The Technique. The actual mechanism for rotating the satellites has been completely modified on the UR103T. With this model the satellites rotate simultaneously behind the scenes in multiple stages, in preparation for their turn to indicate the time. They actually perform a four-beat 480° pirouette. Each satellite turns four 120° turns in the period between leaving the minute arc and arriving again with a new numeral displaying. The orbital satellite complication is over 300 times heavier than traditional hands, a factor that requires absolute precision in the manufacture of its minuscule components, and in assembling, balancing and regulating the complication to obtain the excellent chronometric performance URWERK demands of its exceptional timepieces.

The Force. The four satellites of the UR103T are made of aluminum and mounted on their own bronze/beryllium Geneva cross. The mechanism is then suspended from the orbital cross structure in ARCAP 40, a material that is light, non magnetic and corrosion resistant, and is mounted on an ARCAP plate.

However, the essential feature of the UR103T is not technical but human, a testament to URWERK’s master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner, visionary chief designer Martin Frei and their talented team.

The Original PAM

The new Panerai PAM 341 is based off of the original stainless steel water-resistant GPF 2/56 that was created for Commandos of the Egyptian Navy in 1956.  Very few of these original GPF 2/56′s were made – fifty, to be exact.  They had 16″ Angelus 8-day movement (recognizable by the subsidiary seconds dial at 9), a rotating bezel, and a brown-colored dial.  Not only did the signature Panerai security lever on the crown offer protection, it also enabled the watch to be wound under water.

Luxury watch manufacturer Parmigiani Fleurier has joined forces with the prestigious Italian luxury yacht company Pershing to offer the first Pershing aquatic sport watches.  Together their new luxury watch line represents the core of what each company stands for – excellence, creative spirit, perfection, and the unique history behind both companies.

The Pershing collection comprises two different lines:

1. The limited edition ‘one-one-five’, available in 18 carat rose gold and 950 Palladium is available in two dial versions, tan and silver, each of 115 pieces, incorporating the self-winding chronograph movement Calibre PF 190. It has been created in honour of the biggest and most prestigious Pershing vessel, measuring 115 feet which can be found engraved on the watch case-back.
2. The second line is the Pershing Chronographs collection, available in steel with four dial variants, and is non-limited edition. The special form of the numerals on the dial is in the spirit of the Pershing logotype. The models incorporate all the style codes now connected to the brand, thus retaining a classic appearance. It comes in four dial versions: graphite, silver, blu metal and amaranth.
